To a certain extent yeah.
ahahadotwav: as a jewel thief but in today's world you have to be thieving gold bars, rare coins, tapestries, and all sorts of other junk as well just to get by. at that point you are better off just going to the forest and becoming a brigand. (in the past you could survive solely)

My story had been pretty depressing up until he decided he didn't like the way it ended, so it was a surprising, yet refreshing change of genre.

But that's just me... and I can't say other factors didn't also play a part in it. To be honest, I remained skeptical through and through. Couldn't afford to have any hope, even with his persistence.

You have to be a little crazy to be a sorcerer, to detach yourself from your own humanity to a certain extent. But it isn't even a rewarding profession. Sorcerers face the most grotesque monsters and situations ona daily basis, constantly risking their lives for a bunch of idiots who can't even see they are in danger in the first place.

It's like running an endless marathon where the finish line is just a pile of your comrades' corpses.

...Hah. We witches don't face the same kinds of dangers or disappointments, but... well. In a world where magic "doesn't exist", the only reason anyone turns to magic is because they've got nothing else.
