In a certain ancient story within another tediously long story they are a type of asura, assumed by most to be evil and known for being blood drinking man-eaters who disrupted the lives of the gods at every opportunity. But it isn't so straightforward, as some are good and some are evil, but generally they are powerful warriors and magicians, with illusory and shape shifting powers.

They are also beings born of hunger, born to hunger, but notable for none-the-less choosing to protect what they hunger for.
